USS Cavalla Aft Engine Room. Cavalla was originally equipped with four General Motors 278A V-16 diesel engines that were capable of developing nearly sixteen hundred horsepower each. These diesels were used to turn large DC generators to supply power for the ship and to charge the batteries on the surface. The number two diesel was removed in the early 50's when Cavalla was converted to an SSK (Submarine Killer) | |
