Home Up Submarine Battle Flags Lost Boats of World War II USS Texas Arrival During World War II the total submarine forces of the Navy were comprised of about 14,750 officers and men, only two percent of the Navy's wartime personnel. Fifty-five percent of all Japanese shipping, about 5,000,000 tons, and 215 naval vessels totaling over 500,000 tons were sunk by our submarines. They also rescued 511 aviators who had been shot down by the Japanese in various attacks.
  • A total of 52 United States submarines were lost during WWII.
  • The United States submarine service sustained the highest mortality rate of all branches of the U.S. Military during WWII
  • 1 out of every 5 U.S. Navy submariners was killed in WWII
  • 3,505 American submariners made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of their country in World War II.
